Perennial herbs, stems erect. Basal rosette leaves interruptedly imparipinnate. Terminal leaflet largest. Cauline leaves alternate, often ternately lobed or reduced. Stipules adnate to petiole. Inflorescence terminal, cymose, 1 to few flowered, flowers bisexual. Hypanthium saucer-shaped to obconical, open. Epicalyx present. Sepals 5, valvate to imbricate. Petals 5, suborbicular to obovate, yellow, white, pink, red or purple. Stamens and carpels numerous. Stigma punctiform. Stylodia terminal, lower part persistent and hooked at the apex, elongating after flowering, upper part decidous. Fruit an achenetum. Achenes many on a dry receptacle. Seeds with membranous testa. Ovule 1, basal, ascending.
A genus of about 42 species, distributed in Europe, Asia, North and South America, South Africa. Represented in Pakistan by 2 species.
