1. Trianthema L. (sea purslane)
Twenty to 25
species, nearly worldwide, mostly in tropical and warm-temperate regions.
Barker (1986)
reported Sesuvium verrucosum Raf. from Missouri without citation of a locality or
voucher specimen. This species is native to Africa and Australia and occurs as a weed in disturbed
areas with saline soils from the southwestern United
States eastward to Kansas,
Oklahoma, and Texas. The genus Sesuvium differs
from Trianthema in its ovaries with 3–5 locules, 3–5 styles, and
numerous ovules, as well as its leaves lacking expanded stipular bases.
