Description
|
Monoecious; inflorescences small, usually partly hidden in the upper sheaths, each bearing both staminate and pistillate spikelets in no definite arrangement; staminate spikelet: glumes and sterile lemma wanting; lemma and palea acute or acuminate, thin, the lemma 1-nerved; stamens 3; pistillate spikelet: first glume wanting; second glume and sterile lemma acuminate, subequal, 3- or usually 5- nerved, the lateral nerves approximate, finely transversely veined; fertile floret subcylindrical, raised on the enlarged and thickened segment of the rachilla; lemma firm, subindurate, smooth and shining, gradually narrowed to a blunt tip, the margins not inrolled; palea as long as the lemma, similar in texture.
