Trees, monoecious or dioecious. Leaves alternate, dentate or lobed; stipules not connate leaving a one-side scar. Flowers in short dense spikes; the staminate flowers with 4 partite perianth, the 4 stamens inflexeed in bud; the pistillate flowers with more or less 4 free segments, becoming fleshy in fruit.
