General/Distribution: A genus of 2 species; origin uncertain, but probably in coastal forests in Brazil. Widely cultivated in tropical India and China. Introduced into India and Pakistan most probably by the Portuguese.

Trees. Leaves imparipinnate; leaflets subopposite. Flowers in cymose panicles, axillary or arising directly from the stem and branches. Ovary not beaked, 5-locular, with numerous ovules in each locule. Berry oblong, more or less 5-lobed. Seeds arillate or exarillate; aril fleshy and surrounding the seeds.
