General/Distribution: A genus with about 50 species, distributed in Mediterranean and temperate Europe to Central Asia; represented in Pakistan by one species.

Bulbous perennials, with or without offsets. Leaves all basal 1-6 (-), linear to strap-shaped. Scapes bearing racemes or spikes, apical flowers often sterile and different in colour from fertile ones. Bracts small. Perianth globose, urceolate or tubular and ± asymmetrical, constricted at mouth, terminal lobes (teeth) small. Stamen included, filaments inserted in the tube, in two rows, anthers small, globose, dark blue. Ovary trigonous, triloculate with 2 ovules in each locule. Capsule acutely trigonous to trialate. Seed globose, black. Sterile flowers, when present, are borne above fertile ones.
