Generic distribution and diversity

A pantropical genus with about 200 species; c. 107 species in Africa, 25 species in Madagascar and 50-60 species in the New World; in Indo-Malesia 12-13 species extending from S.E Asia throughout Malesia to N Australia, Melanesia and the Carolines. (From: Jacobs & Moore 1971.)
