General/Distribution: A. genus of c. 20 species, distributed in the tropics of Africa, Asia, Madagascar and Himalayas; respresented by the following species in Pakistan.

Large shrub or tree. Branches thick, branchlets compressed; stipules large. glandular-ciliate or serrate, deciduous. Leaves opposite, petiolate, deciduous, usually elliptic-ovate or obovate-oblong, coriaceous. Inflorescence fascicled. axillary or with terminal particles, peduncled. Flowers small, inconspicuous, greenish; bracts lanceolate, reticulately veined, sub-persistent. Calyx-tube shod, 5-lobed above, lobes ovate or subulate, not persistent. Corolla funnel-shaped or campanulate; limbs 5, short, glabrous inside. Stamens 5, filament very shod. inserted under the throat of corolla, anthers included, linear. Ovary 2-loculed; style exserted; stigma clavate-capitate; slightly lobed; ovules numerous. Capsule bilocular, 2-valved, dehiscing lengthwise, many-seeded. Seeds flat.
