Herbs, unarmed, epiphytic on tree trunks, with raphides in the tissues, generally spreading to drooping. Leaves opposite but markedly anisophyllous and often appearing alternate, subsessile to shortly petiolate, entire, with higher-order venation not lineolate, without domatia, with smaller leaves often appressed to stem; stipules interpetiolar, triangular, acute, erect and apparently valvate or imbricated in bud, caducous. Inflorescences terminal, shortly fasciculate, 2--4-flowered, pedunculate, bracteate and enclosed by two flattened, ovate, green, involucral bracts. Flowers subsessile to pedicellate, bisexual, apparently homostylous, apparentlly protandrous, apaprently diurnal, whether fragrant unknown; hypanthium apparently turbinate to ellipsoid; calyx limb developed, 5-lobed, without calycophylls; corolla funnelform with well developed tube, white to blue or violet, internally glabrous?, lobes 5, ligulate to ovate, valvate in bud, marginally crisped and with two well developed ligulate to lobulate appendages (lobes sometimes appearing bilobed); stamens 5, inserted near middle of corolla tube?, anthers ellipsoid, dorsifixed, opening by linear slits, without appendage?, included; ovary 2-locular, with ovules numerous in each locule, on axile placentas; stigmas 2, included. Fruits baccate or perhaps tardily capsular, cupuliform, fleshy, perhaps green at maturity, with calyx limb deciduous?; seeds numerous, flattened, with a tuft of trichomes on one end.
