Monoecious or dioecious shrubs or small trees. Leaves scaly or needle‑like, opposite. Male cones terminal or axillary, ovaloid. Microsporophylls bearing 3‑7 microsporangia on the undersurface. Female cones of 3‑8 scales, becoming ± fleshy at maturity. Seeds solitary, not winged.
