Herbs, perennial; caudex well developed, simple or few branched, covered with petiolar remains of previous years. Stems (0.8–)1.2–2.5(–3) dm, erect, simple or rarely branched above, glabrous. Basal leaves persistent; petiole (1–)2–5.5(–8) cm, thickened and glabrous at base; leaf blade linear-oblanceolate to obovate, (2–)3–7(–10) x (0.5–)0.8–2(–2.6) cm, tomentose with fine dendritic trichomes, base attenuate, margin entire, apex obtuse to acute; cauline leaves 5–12, not overlapping, sessile, ovate to oblong or linear lanceolate, 7–20 x 2–6 mm, densely to sparsely pubescent or rarely subglabrous, base auriculate, margin entire. Racemes glabrous; fruiting pedicels divaricate, (0.6–)1–3(–3.5) cm. Sepals oblong, 4–6 x 1.5–2.2 mm, glabrous; petals purple to lavender, spatulate to oblanceolate, 9–13(–15) x 2.5–4 mm, attenuate to base; filaments 4–5 mm; anthers 1–1.5 mm. Fruits lanceolate to linear, (2–)3–6(–9) cm x (2–)3–5(–6) mm, latiseptate, divaricate; valves glabrous, with a prominent midvein; gynophore obsolete or rarely to 2 mm; style 0.5–2 mm. Seeds brown, broadly ovate to oblong, (2–)2.5–3.2 x (1.5–)1.8–2.5 mm. 2n = 28.

Habitat: rocky scree, rocky basaltic slopes, volcanic rubble, barren clay slopes, rimrocks, scablands, ledges of metamorphic rock outcrops, rocky crevices and open knolls, sandy banks, gravelly meadows, grassy or gravelly hillsides, sagebrush scrub and slopes, alpine slopes, volcanic boulders.
