4. Stanleya elata M. E. Jones, Zoe 2: 16. 1891. TYPE: United States, Nevada, Mineral Co., Rhodes, near Hawthorne, 23 Jun 1882, M. E. Jones 3774 (holotype, POM!; isotypes, CAS!, GH!, MO!, NY!, UC!, US!, UTC).

     Herbs, short-lived perennial, glabrous, glaucous. Stems 6–15(–18) dm, erect, simple or few branched below and above, glabrous, weakly striate. Basal leaves withered by flowering; lower and middle cauline leaves leathery; petiole 3–9(–12) cm; leaf blade broadly lanceolate or oblong to ovate, (5.5–)8–21(–26) × 2–8(–13) cm, glabrous or rarely sparsely pilose abaxially, entire or rarely with few, small lobes just below blade, gradually reduced in size upwards. Racemes densely flowered, elongated in fruit; fruiting pedicels slightly reflexed to horizontal or divaricate, (5–)7–11(–15) mm, glabrous. Flowers: sepals linear, 7–11 mm, glabrous or sparsely pilose, spreading to reflexed; petals whitish to lemon yellow, 0.8–1.3 cm; blade linear, 6–8 × 0.3–1 mm; claw thickened, slightly wider at base, glabrous, 4–7 mm; filaments 5–13 mm, papillate at base; anthers linear, 2.5–4 mm. Fruit linear, 4–9(–10.5) cm × 1.5–2 mm, subterete, spreading to curved downward, slightly curved; valves glabrous; gynophore 0.7–2 cm, glabrous; style 0.2–1.5 mm; seed and ovules 46–70 per fruit. Seeds brown, oblong, 1.5–2.6 × 1–1.3 mm. 2n = 28.

Flowering: May–Jul.

Habitat: sandy or gravelly soil in sagebrush and mixed shrub communities, desert scrub, decomposing granite.

Elevation: 1200–2000 m.

Distribution: United States (Arizona, EC California, S and WC Nevada).
