     Herbs perennial, scapose, cespitose; caudex many branched, covered with leaves or leaf remains of previous seasons, some branches terminated in sterile rosettes. Stems (0.5–)2–8(–15) cm, unbranched, pubescent throughout with simple and 2-rayed trichomes 0.4–1 mm, these mixed with 3–5-rayed trichomes 0.05–0.4 mm, sometimes trichomes mostly simple. Basal leaves rosulate, oblanceolate to obovate, 6–18 × 1.5–5 mm, entire; abaxial surfaces pubescent with stalked, 2–6-rayed trichomes 0.2–0.6 mm; adaxial surfaces pubescent with primarily simple and stalked, 2-rayed trichomes to 1.1 mm and mixed with 3–5-rayed trichomes 0.2–0.4 mm; petiolar base and margin ciliate with often coarse simple trichomes 0.4–1.3 mm; cauline leaves of flowering stems absent. Racemes ebracteate, 2–9(–12)-flowered, corymbose or only slightly elongated in fruit; rachis pubescent as stem, not flexuous; lowermost fruiting pedicels 4–11(–16) mm, divaricate-ascending, straight or slightly curved upward, pubescent with simple and 2–4-rayed trichomes. Flowers: sepals grayish green, broadly ovate, 2.2–3 mm, with simple trichomes to 1 mm and sometimes stalked, smaller, 2–4-rayed trichomes; petals yellow, broadly patent, obovate, 4–6 × 3–5 mm; anthers ovate, 0.3–0.4 mm. Fruits oblong or ovate, 6–12 × 3.5–5.5 mm, flattened, not twisted, pubescent or puberulent with simple trichomes sometimes mixed with short-stalked, 2- or 3-rayed trichomes 0.1–0.4 mm; style 0.6–1 mm; stigma distinctly wider than style; ovules and seeds 12–24 per fruit. Seeds ovoid, brown, flattened, 1–1.3 × 0.6–0.9 mm, wingless. 2n = 128, 144.

Flowering: Jun–Aug.

Habitat: moist tundra, among calcareous or dolomitic rocks, gravel beaches, silt and clay terraces.

Elevation: 0–1700 m.

Distribution: Canada (British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon), Greenland Norway, Russia (N European part, Siberia, Far East), United States (Alaska).
