LENTIBULARIACEAE, bladderwort family
Three genera,
about 280 species, nearly worldwide.
The
Lentibulariaceae are a family of carnivorous plants, trapping and digesting
insects and other small invertebrates either with sticky glandular hairs on the
leaf surface (Pinguicula L.), or in specialized pitchers (Genlisea
A. St.-Hil.) or traps (Utricularia). The nutrients provided by decaying
tissues and other organic matter facilitate the survival of the plants in
otherwise nutrient-poor environments.
