Conservation assessment     (Last Modified On 6/10/2022)
Red List Category: Endangered
Status of Conservation Assessment: Preliminary
Date of assessment: 1 August 2018
Assessment rationale: IUCN Red List category: Endangered [EN]. The extent of occurrence (EOO) of Brachycorythis paucifolia is estimated to be over 5846 km2 (exceeding the 100 km2 upper limit for Critically Endangered status under the Criterion B1) and its minimal area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated to be 28 km2 (within the limits for Endangered status under the Criterion B2). Brachycorythis paucifolia is endemic to Upper Guinea and has also been collected from 16 unique occurrences. It is known from the footprint of a mining project undergoing human pressure such as habitat clearing for road and infrastructure building. This species is thus known from 16 specimens that represent 4 subpopulations. These 4 subpopulations represent a total of 5 “locations” (sensu IUCN 2012), falling within the limit for Endangered status. We project that the ongoing loss of its habitat will induce a decline in the number of subpopulations and mature individuals as well as an important decline of its EOO and AOO. Brachycorythis paucifolia is therefore assigned a preliminary status of EN B2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v).
Disclaimer: This preliminary assessment was prepared on 1 August 2018. The map proposed below is only based on the specimens available on Tropicos, therefore, may not correspond to the information provided in the assessment rationale.
