Notes:
The identity of this species is not entirely clear. It was described based on one flowering specimen, which is similar to species of Chiococca, and is characterized by a shrub habit; medium-sized shiny leaves with a few strongly ascending secondary veins; apparently axillary, subcapitate, subsessile, several-flowered inflorescences; narrowly triangular calyx lobes; rather narrowly funnelform corollas with the tube ca. 5 mm long; and partially exserted stamens. It is possible that this is an unusual variant of Chiococca alba. However, some other species from the Greater Antilles have been separated from Chiococca by Paudyal et al. (2018) into monotypic genera, and Chiococca capitata may deserve further study. The form of its corollas is similar to Ramonadoxa, for example, though these differ markedly in inflorescence form. The type specimen in BM is annotated anonymously as Scolosanthus mutiflorus, but does not seem to match that completely. Chiococca capitata was considered a doubtful name and not recognized nor synonymized by Adams (1972), and it was not studied at all by Paudyal et al.
