Notes: This species has been widely but not commonly collected. Andersson (1995) described the flowers as monomorphic but they now appear to be distylous. Cinchonopsis amazonica is similar to species of Cinchona and Ladenbergia, but can be separated from these by its much smaller flowers on generally notably larger inflorescences and the distinctive ridge that encircles the lower side of the base of the petioles, which is not found in species of the other genera. Cinchonopsis amazonica is similar in general aspect in particular to Cinchona micrantha, however Cinchona micrantha can be separated by its corollas that are larger and have a well developed tube that is longer than the lobes and has five longitudinal thinnings in the tissue.
Distribution: Wet forest vegetation at 120-600 (-1900) m in the northern and western Amazon basin, from southern Venezuela and southeastern Colombia to the eastern Andan slopes of Ecuador through Peru into western Brazil, frequently on sandy substrates but also on clay.
