Conservation assessment     (Last Modified On 6/14/2022)
Red List Category: Vulnerable
Status of Conservation Assessment: Preliminary
Date of assessment: 14 June 2022
Assessment rationale: Based on a 2 × 2 km grid cell size, the AOO is estimated at 28 km2, below the upper threshold for the “Endangered” category under subcriterion B2, and its extent of occurrence (EOO) has been calculated as 339,070 km2, exceeding the upper threshold for the “Vulnerable” category under subcriterion B1. Tragia chevalieri is threatened throughout its range by habitat loss through clearance for small-scale agriculture and mining activities (Simandou range). In Sierra Leone, only 5% of the closed-canopy evergreen forest remains today, with the remaining trees covering secondary forest, forest regrowth, or fallow bush (Okoni Williams et al. 2001). In Guinea, the national estimate of the rate of forest loss was 0.5%/yr (FAO 2010). However, deforestation rates have increased dramatically in the past few years. Since 2013, tree cover loss in Guinea has averaged 2.2 %/per year, and the Nzérékoré region has had the most tree cover loss at 451kha compared to an average of 212kha for the rest of Guinea. Consequently, the species is preliminarily assessed as Vulnerable under criterion B since it is probably known from 7 locations.
