Alpine Wallowa Mts, 10,000 ft, 29 Aug 1900, William C. Cusick 2497 (holotype, RM!; isotypes, GH!; K!, MO!, NDG!, NY!, POM!, US!, WS!).

     Herbs perennial, cespitose, not pulvinate, scapose; caudex branches many, covered with petiolar remains of previous seasons, some branches terminated in sterile rosettes. Stems 1–6(–10) cm, unbranched, thinly pilose throughout with simple and stalked, 2(or 3)-rayed, often crisped trichomes 0.1–0.8 mm. Basal leaves rosulate, short petiolate, somewhat fleshy, oblanceolate to obovate, 4–10 × 2–5 mm, entire; abaxial surfaces glabrous or hirsute with stalked, 2-rayed trichomes 0.1–0.6 mm, these rarely mixed with fewer simple trichomes, midvein obscure; adaxial surfaces glabrous or hirsute with almost exclusively simple trichomes to 0.6 mm; petiolar base and margin ciliate with simple trichomes 0.2–1 mm; cauline leaves of flowering stems absent. Racemes ebracteate, 5–14(–20)-flowered, elongated in fruit; rachis pubescent as stem, not flexuous; lowermost fruiting pedicels 3–8(–10) mm, horizontal to divaricate-ascending, often curved upward or straight, softly and sparsely pilose as stem. Flowers: sepals ovate, 1.5–2.2 mm, caducous, pubescent with simple and short-stalked 2-rayed trichomes; petals yellow, spatulate, 4–5.5 × 1.5–2.5 mm, caducous; anthers oblong, 0.6–0.7 mm. Fruits oblong to oblong-ovate, 3.5–9 × 2.5–4 mm, flattened, not twisted, glabrous; style 0.3–1 mm; ovules and seeds 8–12 per fruit. Seeds ovoid, flattened, 1.4–1.9 × 1–1.2 mm, wingless.

Flowering: Jul–Aug.

Habitat: basaltic talus, stony ridges.

Elevation: 2550–3050 m.
