Corolla pink. This species was separated at one time as a monotypic genus, see the Schmidtottia genus page for more information.
Borhidi et al. (2017: 67) recognized three varieties of this species, which differed by leaf size (partially) and shape and had separate geographic ranges: the typical variety and var. moaensis in two areas in Holguín, and var. elatior in Guantánamo. The distinctions among them seem minor, and these were characterized as equivalent to "razas" (i.e., races) by them. With no specimens available, these cannot be evaluated in detail here.
