Leaf blades with
the undersurface pale green, persistently and moderately to densely woolly with
mostly small, sessile, stellate hairs. Bracts often stellate-hairy, at least
when young. Stalks of flowers and fruits usually persistently pubescent with
minute, sessile, stellate hairs, occasionally nearly glabrous at fruiting.
May–July.
Uncommon in the
eastern and southwestern portions of the state and somewhat disjunct in Jackson
County (eastern U.S. west to Missouri and Louisiana). Bottomland forests, mesic
upland forests, banks of streams and rivers, and bases and ledges of bluffs;
also edges of pastures.
