1b. var. heterophylla (Vent.) Loudon (white basswood, white linden, silver-leaved linn)

T. heterophylla Vent.

Pl. 455 a

Leaf blades with the undersurface pale green, persistently and moderately to densely woolly with mostly small, sessile, stellate hairs. Bracts often stellate-hairy, at least when young. Stalks of flowers and fruits usually persistently pubescent with minute, sessile, stellate hairs, occasionally nearly glabrous at fruiting. May–July.

Uncommon in the eastern and southwestern portions of the state and somewhat disjunct in Jackson County (eastern U.S. west to Missouri and Louisiana). Bottomland forests, mesic upland forests, banks of streams and rivers, and bases and ledges of bluffs; also edges of pastures.
