Synonym Text: C. mariscus (L.) Pohl subsp. martii (Roem. & Schult.) Egor., l. c.: 129. 1976. Isolepis martii Roem. & Schult., Syst. Veg. 2: 117. 1817. C. mariscus (L.) Pohl var. martii (Roem. & Schult.) Kük., Feddes Rep. 51: 187. 1942. Cladium grossheimii Pobed. in Not. Syst. Leningrad 12: 13. 1950. Egorova, in An. A. Fedorov, Fl. Partis Europ. URSS 2: Tabl. 18, figs. 1 – 2. 1976. Hooper, in Townsend & Guest, Fl. Iraq 8: Pl. 90. 1985.
Flower/Fruit: Fl. Per.: April – June.
Habitat: Swamps, in shallow water in rivers and lakes.
Distribution: Distribution: Europe, except NE, N Africa, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Caucasus, Turkestan, Pakistan and Kashmir; NE to Kazakhstan.
Comment/Acknowledgements: “Circa urbem Kashmir”, 5200’, Jacquemont 645 (K). The taxonomic treatment of C. mariscus is not stabilized. As interpreted here C. mariscus s.s. includes Cladium martii (Roem. & Schult.) K. Richt., described from Spain, Catalonia (as Isolepis martii), to accommodate plants with large, diffuse inflorescences (cf. Egorova in Novit. Syst. Pl. Vascul. 28, 1991; Kukkonen in Rech.f., l.c. 156. 1998). Cladium mariscus subsp. mariscus appears to be restricted to Europe, N. Africa and SW Asia, including Caucasus. It is not found in Siberia East of Ural, neither does it occur in regions north of Caspian Sea. The species is missing in lowlands of India; C.B.Clarke (in Fl. Br. India 1894) names it only from Kashmir. Koyama (in Hara & al., Enum. pl. Nepal 1: 96-120, 1978) assigns Chinese material and the single specimen from Nepal into C. jamaicense subsp. chinense (Nees) T. Koyama.

Subsp. mariscus is characterized by rather compact partial inflorescences with 3-10 spikes in the clusters (more open and with 2-5 spikes in clusters in subsp. jamaicense), spikes 6-8 mm long (2-3 mm), nut 2-3 mm long, smooth (2 mm, rugulose).
