The robust corollas are tubular with reflexed lobes, white, and ca. 10-12 cm long and have a strong gardenia fragrance. This species was described originally as having 5-merous flowers, but one flower on one of the paratypes (Gándara & Dorantges 90, MO) is 6-merous.
Borhidi (2007) transferred this species to Resinanthus based on its resinous stipules, but this genus is separated from Stenostomum differently here and Stenostomum aromaticum does not agree with Resinanthus.
