Leaves deeply lobed. Outer phyllaries smooth or callose, linear to lanceolate or rarely ovate, recurved, not emarginate, rarely marginate. Ligules yellow to deep yellow. Styles and stigmas usually yellow, dull yellow or brownish, occasionally drying blackish. Cypsela usually greyish to brownish or rarely reddish, with abruptly formed subconical cone, usually 0.4 – 0.8 mm,  rarely more than 1 mm long.

The largest section with more than 1500 species, mainly distributed in Europe, W. and C. Siberia, also in the near East, it is represented by 6 species in Pakistan.
