Taxon Profile     (Last Modified On 8/31/2016)
Description: Plants 200–600 mm high. Corm globose, 15–20 mm diam.; tunics of medium to coarsely textured fibres. Stem simple or with 1–3 straight, widely divergent branches. Leaves 3, all basal, lower 2 narrowly to broadly lanceolate, (3–)5–10 mm wide, usually ± half as long as stem, main vein and margins moderately thickened, uppermost leaf entirely sheathing, reaching to middle or upper third of stem. almost straight. Spike usually 3–6-flowered, lateral spikes 1–4-flowered; bracts membranous, translucent, outer 8–10 mm long, with 3 purple veins, shallowly 3-toothed, inner as long to slightly longer than outer, 2-veined, forked at apex. Flowers salver-shaped, pale to deep pink, tepals purple to blackish toward base, lightly sweet scented; perianth tube slightly curved and cylindric for 2–3 mm, widening abruptly into a cup ± 3 mm deep; tepals obovate, spreading at ± right angles to tube, subequal, (14–)18–22 × (6–)10–12 mm, inner slightly wider than outer. Filaments inserted at mouth of narrow part of tube, connivent, 5–6 mm long, ± black; anthers divergent, 6–7 mm long (before anthesis), black; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite anther bases, black, branches 2–3 mm long. Flowering time: late August to mid September.
Country: South Africa
South African Province: Western Cape
Distribution and ecology: a narrow endemic of the Montagu District of Western Cape, recorded from just three farms, between 10 to 30 km east of Montagu; on loamy sandy clay along the northern foot of the Langeberg at the interface of the Table Mountain and Bokkeveld Systems.
Diagnosis: among the most attractive species of Ixia, I. superba is recognized by the relatively crowded spike of large flowers and the pink perianth with a large, glossy black centre. Unusual for sect. Ixia the black bases of the tepals are united in a wide cup about 3 mm deep. The stamens and style branches are also a darkly pigmented with the erect filaments clasping the style and the anthers diverging. Significantly, the style divides above the bases of the anthers. The lower two leaves are lanceolate and comparatively broad, up to 10 mm wide and the third leaf sheathes the stem for its entire length. It has been confused with I. gloriosa and was at first included in that species, perhaps due to the flower colour, although I. gloriosa has deep red flowers with a blackish centre when seen alive. Differences between the two, apart from perianth colour, include leaf width (leaves of I. gloriosa are linear and only up to 3 mm wide), shape of the flowers and the short, erect branches of I. gloriosa in contrast to the spreading branches of I. superba. The style of I. gloriosa divides opposite the bases of the filaments unlike that in I. superba. Both species have the outer floral bracts 3-toothed, sometimes with the central tooth somewhat more prominent.
