Habitat:

Fields and waste places (disturbed habitats). Acco Plain, Sharon Plain, Philistean Plain, Upper Galilee, Esdraelon Plain, Samaria, Judean Mts., Samarian and Judean Deserts, N. Negev, Hula Plain, Upper Jordan Valley (Kinrot Valley), Mt. Gilboa, Arava Valley, Golan, Gilead, Ammon.    

Area distribution:

Mediterranean, Euro-Siberian and Irano-Turanian.    

Notes:

    Two forms can be distinguished: one with petals that are shorter or scarcely longer than calyx, the other without petals or sometimes with 2-5 very short ones.

Annual, glandular-pubescent herb, 10-35 cm. Stems erect or ascending, simple or branching. Leaves up to about 3 x 1 cm., the lower obovate-spatulate, tapering into a petiole, the upper all sessile, oblong-elliptical, apiculate. Inflorescences dichasial, flowers clustered. Pedicels shorter than calyx, later spreading or recurved. Calyx about 5 mm.; sepals oblong-lanceolate, acute-acuminate, white-margined, with a few long hairs at tip. Petals about as long as sepals, white, 2-fid, sometimes 0, with one or more cilia on each side near base. Stamens 10. Styles 5. Capsule about 1 cm., narrowly cylindrical, slightly curved above, opening by short, acute teeth with revolute margins. Seeds finely tuberculate. Fl. February-April.
