Habitat:

Bathas and steppes, rock crevices. Mt. Gilboa, Samaria, Shefela, Judean Mts., Samarian and Judean Deserts, N. Negev, Negev Highlands, Upper Jordan Vallley, (Golan?), Gilead, Edom.    

Area distribution:

 Mainly Mediterranean.    

Notes:

The records in Post (1932) on P. capitata (L.) Lam., Fl. Fr. 3: 229 (1778) from Palestine have been once considered doubtful but this taxon has been later identified from Palestine and described here. The relations between this species and Paronychia macrosepala Boiss. and Paronychia sinaica require further studies.

    Paronychia jordanica Chaudhri [Meded. Bot.Mus. Herb. Rijks Univ. Utrecht 285: 280 (1968)], based on a specimen from Nazareth (J. Bornmuller 226) and supposedly endemic to the Flora Palaestina, is hardly distinguishable from P. capitata and thus included in the latter.

Perennial herbs, generally densely pubescent. Stems caespitose. Leaves 3-13 x 1.2-2.5 mm., narrowly elliptical-oblong, ciliate. Heads over 10 mm. in diam. Flowers 3-5.5 mm. Calyx 2-3 mm.; sepals all erect, with short appressed hairs at margins. Seeds up to 1 mm. in diam. Fl. March-May.
