Description

Cespitose annual, with slender sulcate culms 0.5-3.5 din. long, 0.5-1 mm. wide; leaves basal, soft, 1-2 mm. wide, shorter than, or sometimes equalling the culm; inflorescence terminal, of 3-5 sessile spikes, with 2-3 involucral bracts 1-12 cm. long; spikes ovoid, obtuse, terete, 4-10 mm. long; scales hyaline to sub- rigid, acute, frequently incurved, yellow to purple, 0.7-0.8 mm. wide, lanceolate to broadly cuneate, inner scale hyaline, carinate, often nearly twice as long as the achene which it encloses; achene linear, 0.9-1.2 mm. long, 0.3-0.4 mm. wide, yellow to dark brown, lightly papillose.
