Notes

Persoon used the symbol * in front of species names to indicate that they are doubtful species or obscurely known species to him. See his preface of Syn. Pl. (vol. 1: x. 1805). An example of this practice is Coreopsis odortissima Cav. ex Pers., Syn. Pl. 2: 477 (1807). At the infrageneric rank he explicitly used the rank of subgenus; see p. ix: "Moreover I have judged it better to unite those species (perhaps with some exceptions) differing only slightly from others in generic character (especially if it is not a large genus) under a special division or subgenus..." [translation by R. Gereau, 22 Sep 2020]; TL2 dates: v. 1: [Apr-15 Jun 1805]; v. 2(1) 1-272 [Nov 1806]; v. 2(2): 273-657 [Sept 1807]
