Stems and leaves often purple-tinged. Petals dark purple. 2n=22. April–June.

Uncommon and widely scattered in the Ozark Division (eastern [mostly southeastern] U.S. west to Kansas and Louisiana). Mesic to dry upland forests and banks of streams; also roadsides.
