Spores 38–52 mm in diameter, 64 per sporangium. 2n=58 (sexual).

Known thus far only from Carter, Dent, Jefferson, and Pulaski Counties (endemic to Missouri). Limestone and dolomite bluffs.

The diploid, sexual variety of this species was first reported for the state by Wagner et al. (1965). It is the rare progenitor of the more common, apomictic, tetraploid var. glabella. Although it appears endemic to the Missouri Ozarks, this easily overlooked taxon eventually may be found in other portions of the species' range.
