1a. var. latiusculum (Desv.) Underw. ex A. Heller Pl. 3a,b

Pinnules finely pubescent on the upper surface margins and along the undersurface midribs. Terminal lobes of the pinnules mostly 1–4 times as long as wide. 2n=104. July–September.

Scattered in the southern half of the state, mostly in the Ozarks, and locally north to Sullivan County (eastern U.S. west to Texas and North Dakota; Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia). Openings of rocky, upland forests and road banks, mostly in acid soils.

This is the more common variety in Missouri.
