Plants 10–20(–30)
cm tall, few- to several-branched at the base (also well branched above the
base, the branches frequently ascending), the main stems spreading or loosely
ascending, frequently rooting at the nodes. Leaf blades oblanceolate, widest
above the middle. 2n=18. July–October.
Scattered in the
Ozark, Ozark Border, Glaciated Plains, and Mississippi Lowlands Divisions
(eastern U.S. west to Kansas and Texas). Bottomland forests, mesic to dry
upland forests, banks of streams and rivers, and occasionally margins of ponds
and lakes; also roadsides, usually on acidic substrates.
