Description: Andromonoecious trees 5–25 m tall, well branched, young stems with numerous pustular lenticels below the insertion of each leaf. Leaves palmately compound, (27–)56–67 cm long (incl. petiole); leaflets (5–)6–10, medium green above, shiny, paler beneath, subcoriaceous to coriaceous, elliptic to obovate, sometimes narrowly so, occasionally oblong, (9.3–)16.3–36.6 × 3.2–14.6 cm, glabrous, dull to shiny, the primary pale green, vein slightly raised above, raised beneath, the secondary veins slightly raised on both surfaces, sometimes obscure above, parallel and closely spaced (“calophyllous”), 39–130 per side, tertiary veins visible on both surfaces, sometimes obscure above, the base rounded or cuneate, occasionally asymmetrical, the margin entire, minutely revolute, the apex acute to obtuse or rounded, rarely emarginate; petiolules (1.4–)2.7–9.2 cm long; petiole (12–)30–41.5 cm long, (3–)5–10 mm diam., the base clasping, enlarged, with scattered pustular lenticels, the ligulate stipule forming a collar 7–10 mm long. Inflorescence a terminal or sometimes pseudo-lateral, compound umbel, with 3 (rarely 4) orders of branching, glabrous, hemispherical, cataphylls apparently lacking, bracts caducous, triangular to narrowly triangular, 4.2–14.4 mm long, leaving a scar, primary axis 1.7–6.3(–10.5) cm long, the secondary axes 4 or 5, forming a terminal, umbellate cluster, rarely 1 secondary axis borne laterally along the primary axis, each 6.1–17.7 cm long, typically terminating in an umbellule of 2–7 hermaphroditic flowers surrounded by a whorl of 7–16 tertiary axes, each bearing a terminal umbellule of 6–21 staminate flowers (rarely mixed with a few hermaphroditic flowers), pedicels of hermaphroditic flowers 7.6–15 mm long, expanding to 7–21 mm in fruit, 0.7–1.8 mm diam., those of the staminate flowers 2.6–8.1 mm long, 0.7–1.8 mm in diam., bracts apparently lacking. Calyx forming a collar in bud, sometimes a rim in flower, c. 0.3–1.4 mm tall, 6.4–10.9 wide, expanding to 10.7–15.6 in fruit, undulate, lacking apiculate teeth. Corolla conical to hemispherical in bud, the petals 5, yellow-green, narrowly triangular to triangular, 4.1–9.4 mm long. Stamens 5, the filament 3.5–5.8 mm long, anthers cream white, 2.1–4.1 mm long, with 2 thecae. Ovary 6–13-carpellate, obconic to cylindrical with a rounded base, 3.4–5.9 mm high, disc flat to low conical or conical, 5.9–9.6 mm diam., styles entirely united or free for no more than 1/5 their length, 3.2–7.9 mm long (shorter and rudimentary in staminate flowers). Mature fruit terete, medium green turning purple, globose to obloid, ovoid or obovoid, 11–28 mm long, 10–21 mm in diam., strongly ribbed when dry, base rounded to truncate, rarely conical, the persistent calyx forming a low rim, the disc pale to medium green, turning purple.
