Description: Andromonoecious tree, 4–15 m tall, well branched. Leaves palmately compound, (10–)13–28 cm long (incl. petiole); leaflets (4–)5(–8), medium green above, paler beneath, papyraceous to subcoriaceous, typically elliptic but sometimes slightly obovate or ovate, (3.5–) 5–17 × (2–) 3.5–8 cm in mature foliage (young leaves often smaller), glabrous, dull to shiny, the primary vein yellow-green, the primary and secondary veins weakly raised on both surfaces, secondary veins parallel and closely spaced, (20–)25–40 per side, tertiary veins evident, the base acute to attenuate and shortly decurrent on the petiolule, occasionally asymmetrical, the margin entire and minutely revolute, the apex rounded to obtuse or short–acuminate; petiolules 1–4.2 cm long; petiole (5–)7–22 cm long cm long, 2–3 mm diam., the base clasping, occasionally lenticellate, the ligulate stipule the rounded with a membranaceus to scarious margin, forming a collar 8–12 mm long. Inflorescence a terminal or pseudo-lateral compound umbel, with (1–)2(–3) orders of branching, glabrous, hemispherical, cataphylls apparently lacking, bracts orbicular-ovate, 1–2 mm long, caducous, leaving prominent scars, primary axis 1–6 cm long, the secondary axes 3–7, forming a terminal, umbellate cluster, rarely 1 secondary axis borne laterally along the primary axis, each 3–9 cm long, typically terminating in an umbellule of 1–4 hermaphroditic flowers (second order flowers rarely lacking or occasionally mixed hermaphroditic and staminate), usually surrounded by a whorl of 3–10 tertiary axes, each typically terminating in an umbellule of 4–12 staminate flowers (but more rarely terminating in a mixture of staminate and hermaphroditic flowers, or perhaps only hermaphroditic flowers), pedicels of hermaphroditic flowers 5–12 mm long, expanding to 20 mm in fruit, 1–1.5 mm diam., those of the staminate flowers 4–8 mm long, 0.5–0.8 mm in diam.; flowers subtended by lanceolate bracts 1 mm long and caducous. Calyx forming a low, obscurely sinuate rim, 0.5 mm tall, 4–7 mm wide, occasionally with a few apiculate teeth. Corolla rounded and broadly conical in bud, the petals 5 or 6, narrowly triangular, 4–5 mm long. Stamens 5 or 6, the filaments c. 2 mm long, anthers cream white, 1.5–2.5 mm long, with 2 thecae. Ovary 5–7-carpellate, narrowly obconic, c. 10 mm high, disc slightly rounded in flower (becoming low conical in fruit), 4–7 mm diam., styles united for their entire length in hermaphroditic flowers, 1.5 mm long (elongating slightly in fruit), c. 1 mm and rudimentary in staminate flowers. Mature fruit subglobose to broadly ovoid (occasionally ellipsoid), 10–13 mm high, 9–11 mm wide, strongly ribbed when dry, base truncate.
