Leaves narrowly elliptic to obovate, acumen rounded to absent, base rounded, midrib sparsely pubescent, petiole rounded with a distinct apical pulvinus, densely pubescent. Female inflorescence known from fruiting material only; and male inflorescence unknown. Fruit orange-red when ripe, globose, densely pubescent. Seedling with dark-green glabrous stem, tapered hypocotyl, epigeal germination.
Habitus: Tree
Phenology: This species has only been collected with fruits in November. Male and female flowers are unknown.

Distribution: Gabon (endemic)
Distribution Note: Only known from the Belinga mountains of Ogooué-Ivindo province, northeast of Gabon.
Phytogeographical type: Guineo-Congolian Region, Lower Guinea domain, Phytogeographical type Continental.
Note: This species is known only from a single collection (Breteler 589). However, seeds from Breteler 589 were cultivated at the Botanic Gardens greenhouse in Wageningen (nr.78-648) where seedling (Setten 665) has been described (Gosline & Malécot 2011).

Conservation assessment     (Last Modified On 10/25/2021)
Red List Category: Critically Endangered
Status of Conservation Assessment: Published on the Red List
Date of assessment: 27 April 2020
Assessment rationale: Octoknema belingensis is a tree up to 12 m tall, known from rocky bed of permanent creek in closed high forest, around 850 m in elevation. The species is endemic to Gabon and is only known from one collection, thus one occurrence, made by Breteler in 1978 in the Belinga mountains in the Ogooué-Ivindo province. Based on a 2 km x 2 km cell size, the AOO is estimated as 4 km2, below the upper threshold for “Critically Endangered” status under Criterion B2. The EOO cannot be calculated because this species is known from a single occurrence. This occurrence represents, therefore, the sole known subpopulation of the species. This occurrence is located outside of protected areas and is threatened by projected mining activities that could lead to the disappearance of the sole known subpopulation. As a consequence, this occurrence represents 1 location (sensu IUCN 2019), with regards to the most important threat (mining activities). Based on the future disappearance of the only known subpopulation, we infer a current and a future continuous decline in the extent and the quality of its habitat and a future decline of its area of occupancy, its number of locations, and the number of mature individuals. This species is thus assessed as CR B1ab(ii,iii,iv,v).

Disclaimer: This assessment was prepared on 27 April 2020. The map proposed below is only based on the specimens available on Tropicos, therefore, may not correspond to the information provided in the assessment rationale.
Conservation measures: Since this species is threatened by mining activities, various conservation measures must be considered. First, it should be regarded as an HCV1 (High Conservation Value), and as a consequence, should take into account by the mining concession. Second, it should be included in Gabon’s list of protected species, and the destruction of its habitat and possible harvesting must therefore be limited. Finally, a public awareness campaign must be conducted involving mining companies and other private actors, NGOs, scientific institutions, and the Gabonese government, to ensure that the species is taken into consideration when decisions are made that could impact its conservation.
