Description Liana; the stems densely appressed-pubescent when young with weak or stout, appressed, T-shaped trichomes, glabrate in age. Leaves opposite, oblong- elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic, ovate-lanceolate or oblanceolate, acuminate at the apex, obtuse to narrowly rounded at base, 9-20 cm long, 3.5-9.0 cm wide, sparse- ly appressed-pubescent above, especially along the major veins, soon almost glabrous, the midrib sunken, sericeous on the midrib below, with a few scattered trichomes over the blade surface; primary lateral veins 9-12 on each side, more or less evenly spaced, somewhat closer at the base, the tertiary veins prominu- lous, extending almost straight and parallel between the primary lateral veins, the margins entire, rarely glandular; petioles 4-10 mm long, appressed-pubescent with a pair of plate-shaped, elevated glands at the apex; stipules subulate, 3-5 mm long, borne adaxially near the apex of petiole. Inflorescence of short trium- belliferous cymes, shortly pedunculate (0-5 mm); peduncles of the umbels 2-6 mm long, puberulent; bracts and bracteoles ovate, appressed-pubescent, 1.0-1.5 mm long; pedicels slender, 1.0-1.5 cm long, sericeous to sparsely appressed- pubescent. Flowers 12-14 mm in diameter; sepals deltoid, narrowly rounded at the apex, sericeous, ca. 2 mm long; catycine glands present or absent? (see Tonduz 13166), ellipsoid; petals yellow, glabrous, thickly membranaceous, or- bicular-obovate, cuneate at base, ca. 5 mm in diam., denticulate marginally, the 4 lateral petals fimbriate-glandular, the anterior petal more or less entire, the claws ca. 2 mm long; stamens glabrous; styles 3.5 mm long, thickened, somewhat curved, the apex truncate, dilated with the dorsal angle apiculate, the ovary hirsute-villose. Schizocarp of 3 samaras, the lateral wings thinly membranous, semiorbicular, puberulent to weakly villous, 15-18 mm long, 2.2-3.0 cm wide, the dorsal crest 1.5-2.0 mm high, pubescent.
Habit Liana
Distribution ranges from Mexico (?) and Belize to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil and Peru.
Note In Panama it is known only from tropical moist forest in Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui Provinces. The only Panamanian collection had flowers in late February.
