Description Dioecious trees to! 65 m., the younger branchlets sparsely puberulent with canescent hairs, glabrescent. Leaves glabrous above, with fugaceous canescent sessile- stellate hairs below, coriaceous, narrowly oblong, apically short-acuminate, basally acute to attenuate, 9-16 cm. long, 2.3-4 cm. broad, the secondary veins 25-30 per side, the tertiary veins rather obscure; petioles canaliculate, puberulent, 5-10 mm. long, 1-2 mm. broad. Staminate fascicles in panicles up to 4 cm. long, the bracts deciduous, 3-5 mm. long; anthers 3, ca. 0.8 mm. long, connate to apex, the infra- antheral portion of the androecium 0.1-0.3 mm. long. Pistillate flowers in clusters of 3-several in racemes up to 5 cm. long, the connate tepals densely puberulent with much-branched hairs; ovary 1-carpellate, with a subsessile obscurely 2-cleft stigma. Mature fruits 3-8 per inflorescence; pedicels 6-9 mm. long; pericarp densely puberulent, ultimately dehiscing longitudinally into 2 valves, short-stipitate, ellip- soid, 19-32 mm. long, 14-22 mm. broad; aril laciniate, the seed ellipsoid.

Distribution Known only from the Canal Zone and adjacent Panama.
