Perennials; without horizontal or downward tending cataphyllous shoots, tillers intravaginal, cataphylls absent. Culms 10--40 cm, terete. Leaves mostly basal, leaf sheaths terete, basal most sheaths, bulb absent, basal sheaths persistent; flag-leaf sheath margins fused ca. 1/8--2/7 the length; blades flat, moderately thick, soft, straight, mostly basal, prow-tipped. Panicles 2--6(--8) cm, erect, ovoid to pyramidal, open or loosely contracted at maturity; rachis with 1--2 branches per node; primary branches ascending to spreading, straight, terete, smooth or very lightly scabrous, rarely moderately densely scabrous all around. longest branches 1--3(--4) cm, Spikelets ovate, laterally compressed, infrequently bulbiferous; florets normal (rarely bulbous basally and leaf-like distally in ours). glumes broadly lanceolate to narrowly ovate, shorter than to subequaling adjacent lemmas, distinctly keeled, keels lightly scabrous; lower glumes 3-veined; calluses terete, glabrous; lemmas broadly lanceolate, distinctly keeled, keels and marginal veins sericate to sericeous, between veins glabrous or (ours) sparsely to moderately sericate; paleas scabrous near apices, most of the length softly puberulent to sericate over the keels. anthers 3, 1.3--2.3 mm long; Genotype: Aa
