2. Zea mays L., Sp. Pl. 971 (1753). Lectotipo (designado por Iltis y Doebley, 1980): América, Anon. (LINN-1096-1).

Anuales 1-5 m, con raíces fúlcreas; renuevos pocos. Vainas glabras o pelosas; lígula 2.5-8 mm; láminas 20-160 x 3-10 cm, glabras o pelosas; espiguillas estaminadas con la gluma inferior redondeada en el dorso, ecarinada o angostamente alada. 2n=20. Ch-P. 0-3000 m. (Nativa de México y Guatemala; subsp. mays un cultivar obligado cosmopolita.)
