Alternate Note:
The world-wide species, Phragmites australis, has two indigenous races, subsp. americana is distantly related to subsp. berlandieri. The latter subsp. is not greatly differentiated in the molecular markers tested from the introduced European strains of the species. The infraspecific taxonomy of the species in Europe is unsettled, but two subspecies are accepted there by Kerguelen (Syn. Fl. France), subsp. australis (the widespread form), and subsp. crysantha (Mabille) Sojak (the Mediterranean coastal form). See also Euro+Med PlantBase.
