Description Subshrubs to 11/2 m tall, usually ca. 1/2 m tall, the branchlets terete, smooth, drying black, glabrous, the nodes well spaced. Leaves oblong or lanceolate, to 24 cm long, to 11 cm wide, rounded to acute at the apex, usually with a cusp to 1.2 cm long, cuneate at the base, rarely inequilateral, the costa subplane to prom- inulous above, usually subplane beneath, the secondary veins ca. 12, widely arcuate, subplane above and beneath, the intervenal areas smooth, the veinlets not usually evident, drying dark brown or green brown above, tan beneath, gla- brescent to minutely puberulent above and beneath; petioles to 7 cm long, to 0.35 cm wide, smooth, glabrous; stipules deciduous but the bases often persistent, free, hemispherical, to 4 mm long, glabrous, stiff. Inflorescences axillary, usually ascending, the peduncles one per axil, 6-12 cm long, to 0.4 cm wide, angular, glabrous, terminated by a small aggregation of cymules, or branching dichoto- mously once or twice and terminating in conglomerate cymules, or disposed as a panicle with 1 or 2 pairs of well spaced rigid-ascending opposite branches, these terminating in conglomerate cymules, the bracteoles small. Flowers minute; hy- panthium subrotund, ca. 1 mm long, glabrous, the calycine tube 0.7-1.5 mm long, carnose, eglandular but with abundant raphides within, puberulent outside, the teeth absent or scarcely evident; corolla white, the tube cylindrical, somewhat turgid, ca. 2 mm long, carnose, glabrous outside, densely villose above the middle inside, the lobes 5, oblong, to 1.5 mm long, ca. 0.7 mm wide, cucullate at the apex; stamens 5, the anthers oblong, ca. 1 mm long, 0.2 mm wide, dorsifixed, the filaments short, attached near the mouth; stigmas 2. Fruits bright red, sessile, oblong or ovate oblong, to 1 cm long, 0.5-0.8 cm wide, occasionally with the calycine cup persistent, to 1 mm long, each pyrene with a median rib, smooth, glabrous.

Distribution extends from southern Mexico to Colombia and Ecuador. It also occurs in the West Indies.
