Notes: This species is characterized by its low understory habit, bullate leaves that are obtuse to rounded at the apex, and short cincinnoid inflorescences with dull red flowers. It is very similar to Hoffmannia bullulata, and appears to replace it in wet forest on the Pacific slopes of southern Costa Rica and western Panama. Hoffmannia pustulata is also similar to Hoffmannia phoenocopoda.
Distribution: At 100-1300 m, Costa Rica and Panama.
