Description Fleshy shrubs to 1 m tall, the stem round, the branchlets angular, puberulent, longitudinally striate. Leaves oblong or oblanceolate, 12-20 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, deltoid at the apex, often vaguely contracted, the acumen to 0.5 cm long, acute to attenuate acute at the base, often oblique, the costa prominulous above, prominent beneath, to 0. 18 cm wide proximally, the lateral veins 10-16, arcuate, usually with one subparallel vein between a pair of lateral veins, thinly coriaceous to papyraceous, puberulent, often farinose (deciduous hair bases?); petioles to 3 cm long, longitudinally striate; stipules connate, apparently persisting only at the apex of the stem or branchlets, presumably oblong rotund, to 1 cm long or longer with 2 divergent triangular lobes shorter than the body of the stipule and the base of the body with a shallow auricle on each side, crassate, glabrous. Inflorescences axillary, paniculate, subsessile or on peduncles to 3 cm long, the flowers aggre- gated into few-flowered heads, these borne on short branches or subsessile; bracts at the base of the branches subulate, shorter or longer than the branches; floral bracts and bracteoles narrowly ovate or oblong. Habit shrubs
Description pubescent, eglandular within, the raphides numerous, the teeth 5, somewhat un- equal, subulate or narrowly oblong, 0.6-1.0 mm long; corolla white, the tube cylindrical, to 2.5 mm long, petaloid, pubescent outside, ?glabrous within, the lobes 5, in bud spreading, galeate, the anthers fitting in snugly, the hood solid, at anthesis the lobes elongating, the galeate area pulling away from the anthers with much of the lobe plane; stamens 5, the anthers oblong, ca. 1 mm long, obtuse, the filaments short; ovarian disc ca. 0.6 mm long, the style slender, ca. 2 mm long, the stigmas 2, slightly wider than the style. Fruits (immature?) sessile, oblong, ca. 5 mm long, 3.5-4.5 mm wide, white, glabrous, the raphides numerous, the persistent calyx to 2 mm long, the teeth evident.
Distribution known only from Panama.
Note The stipules are quite variable in shape. The galeate tips of the corolla lobes are diagnostic. Dwyer & Hayden 722 notes that the leaves are "velvety green."
