Description
|
Subshrubs to 1 m tall, the ultimate branchlets angular, delicately rimose, gla- brous, the pith porate. Leaves widely oblong or obovate oblong, 3-9 cm long, 2.0-5.5 cm wide, rounded or obtuse or widely deltoid at the apex, only vaguely acuminate, cuneate, obtuse or truncate at the base and contracted abruptly to join the petiole, the costa grooved above, prominulous beneath, the lateral veins ca. 9, prominulous and conspicuous below, forking almost 2/3 of the distance to the margin, the venules evanescent, occasionally with doughnut shaped or cra- teriform domatia in the axils, the pores to 0.2 mm in diam., the margin conspic- uously revolute, coriaceous, concolorous, ashen yellow when dry, glabrous; pet- ioles almost absent or to 0.6 cm long, thick, glabrous; stipules oblong, to 12 mm long, ca. 4 mm wide, obtuse, glabrous, red when dry. Inflorescences pseudoter- minal with a vegetative branch opposite the peduncle, glabrous, the peduncle to 6.5 cm long, terminated by 4-5 radiate branches, to 4 cm long. Flowers white, sessile, the hypanthium turbinate, ca. 1 mm long, the calycine tube subcampan- ulate, to 2 mm long, petaloid, glabrous inside and out, the teeth 5, triangular, to 0.35 mm long; corolla cylindrical, the tube to 2 mm long, petaloid, glabrous outside, villous at the filament attachment, the lobes 5, oblong, ca. 2 mm long, cucullate and galeate; stamens 5, the anthers oblong, 1.2 mm long, obtuse, fitting snugly under the hood of the petal lobe, the filaments ca. 1 mm long, attached near the middle of the tube; stigmas 2, 0.7 mm long, the style ca. 2 mm long, the ovarian disc compressed rotund, ca. 0.8 mm long, drying black. Fruits oblong rotund, ca. 5 mm in diam., the persistent calyx coroniform, ca. 1 mm long, the pyrenes 2, 5-costate, glabrous, somewhat glandular shiny, bright red at maturity.
