Perennial, rhizomatous herbs, 15-100 cm tall, multicellular hairy. Stem simple to branched, erect or ascending. Leaves 1.5-5 x 1-3 cm, usually ovate, cordate, rounded or truncate at base, dentate; petiole 0-7 mm. Raceme axillary, lax, 1-2.5 cm long, 15-35-flowered, hairy; peduncle 2-3 cm long; fruiting pedicel c. 3 mm long; bracts c. 5 mm long, linear to oblanceolate. Calyx 4-lobed, 4 mm long, accrescent in fruit up to 6 mm, lobes linear-elliptic, ciliate. Corolla rotate, 6-12 mm across, tube c. 1.5 mm long, hairy inside, lobes 4, 3 similar and globular, 1 oblong-elliptic, purple to blue. Stamens as long as corolla, anthers dark. Capsule 4-6 x 4-6 mm, obcordate, strongly compressed, sinus broad, base tapering, lobes rounded, hairy on distal end, somewhat dehiscent laterally. Style 3-4 mm long, exserted from the sinus, slender. Seeds 5-20 per capsule, c. 1 mm long, ovate, flat or biconvex, rugose.
