Plants relatively small, in dense, dull, greenish to brownish tufts, slightly radiculose below. Leaves erect, ± crisped when dry, keeled, lanceolate, gradually tapered to an acute to ± rounded-obtuse apex; margins recurved, ± serrulate and often bistratose above; costa percurrent or nearly so, with 2 stereid bands; upper cells irregularly subquadrate, obscure, ± papillose-bulging on both surfaces; lower cells rectangular, smooth, pale, not or very slightly differentiated at the basal angles. Autoicous. Perigonial buds just below the perichaetium, sessile or short-stalked. Perichaetial leaves not much differentiated. Setae elongate, erect or ± flexuose, yellowish; capsules exserted, erect, symmetric, and short-necked or inclined-asymmetric and strumose at base, furrowed when dry and empty; annulus none or compound; operculum obliquely long-rostrate; peristome teeth 16, inserted at or near the mouth, lanceolate, entire or (more commonly) bifid in the upper 1/3-1/2, reddish, vertically pitted-striate below, papillose above. Spores spherical, slightly roughened. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth.
