Notes:
A genus of five species primarily from the Northern Hemisphere. Homalia is readily distinguished by the short, forked or occasional single costa; additional characters include the glossy, asymmetric broadly oblong-ligulate or lingulate leaves, distally finely serrulate to weakly serrulate, broadly acute to obtuse-rounded leaf apices, and rhomboidal to rhombic apical cells. Homalia may be confused with the Neckeraceae, particularly Neckera, but in the latter genus the leaf apex is gradually short acuminate to acute (if obtuse then stem paraphyllia abundant), and the capsules are immersed to shortly exserted. In addition, in Neckera the sparse to abundant paraphyllia (not present in all species) and undulate leaf surface all aid in distinguishing this genus from Homalia.
