Margadant (1968) and Crosby (1970a) considered Drepanophyllum Hooker (1820a) to have been invalidly published since the name Dicranum falcifolium (Schwaegr.) Hook. was listed in synonymy. However, Hooker's elaborate description and illustrations of Drepanophyllum fulvum are based on a different type and so under Article 42 of the International Botanical Code (Greuter 2000) it appears to have been validly published. However, the argument as to whether Drepanophyllum was validly published is moot since Weibel earlier applied the name to a genus in the Umbelliferae.
