Discussion:

Plagiobryum is a genus 8 species, three of which (P. novae-zeelandiae Broth., P. piliferum P. Varde, and P. japonicum Nog.) are weak segregates of P. zieri (Shaw 1982). The genus has a turgid to julaceous habit and pale, lax-celled leaves. Taxonomically significant features are found in its sporophyte and spores. The capsules are strongly zygomorphic with well-developed, elongate necks. The exostome teeth are generally shorter than the endostome segments and are striate with papillae often deposited over and obscuring the striae. The endostome is reduced with slender, narrowly perforate segments, and rudimentary cilia. The spores are fairly large, densely papillose, and often adhere in tetrads until the capsules are mature.

Plants small, erect, in low, dense tufts, simple or sparsely, irregularly branched; rhizoids at base. Leaves appressed to imbricate, ovate to ovate-lanceolate; apices acute; margins plane to irregularly recurved, entire to serrulate above; costa single, ending below the apex to percurrent; cells hyaline above, chlorophyllose below, smooth, lax, thin-walled, upper cells oblong-rhomboidal, basal cells short-rectangular. Dioicous. Setae elongate, curved. Capsules inclined to pendent, asymmetric oblique at mouth, long-clavate, neck well-developed; stomata superficial; opercula low-conic; annuli revoluble; peristome diplolepidous, exostome teeth papillose, reticulate, or striate below, smooth above, trabeculae weakly projecting, endostome basal membrane well-developed, segments slender, narrowly perforate, cilia rudimentary. Spores adhering in tetrads until maturity, ellipsoid, papillose. Calyptrae cucullate, naked.
